How to have an awesome day

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

I like to think that we generally know how to have an awesome day. The formula is simple:

1. Think of things that make you happy

2. Do those things

3. Be happy and have an awesome day! Ta da!

But how often do we get to spend the whole day doing things we love?

In reality, our whole day won't be made up of beach walks, massages, time with animals, healthy food prepared for us [insert your choice of happiness here]! Reality can look a lot more like frustrating mornings, rushed moments, incomplete to-do lists and caffeinated dreams!

So how can you have an awesome day on those days? Here are my top three tips!

1) Find your special place, or your special way.

We all have a favourite place to work from, a favourite spot to spend time in, the ideal playlist to listen to, favourite clothes to wear, the special lipstick we save? Try and think of ways that you can marry whatever you are trying to do with a place you like or an activity you enjoy!

For example, today I had a big morning of "admin" work. I'm not a fan, I'd rather do anything else to be honest! So, I went to a local café and got myself a healthy meal and strong coffee! Did it make the admin work go away? Nope! But it definitely helped having some of my happiness in there!

2) Plan a reward for getting it done!

Don't let your good deed go unacknowledged. Reward yourself and see how you feel next time you tackle some work/activities you don't love. Think of a reward that can be squeezed in into your day and doesn't feel too overwhelming to organise. Think coffee with a friend, buying that book you love, booking an appointment you have been delaying to make or simply stepping outside into nature and enjoying some quiet time! Whatever works for you and your day!

For example, following my morning of admin work, I booked myself an appointment to get my brows done! It's not something that takes very long and it is ideally located near my favourite spot to work. Win win!

3) Remember the big picture

Try and remember why you are doing what you are doing. Is it just part of the job to help move your business forward? Is it really not that much of your week, but it's starting to feel that way? Or is it time to pass that thing you no longer enjoy to someone else and delegate?

Another thing that I did after my successful admin morning is pick up my daughter and take her for a lunch and play date with my bestie and her two babes. They splashed in the water, ran around in the sun, hugged and laughed. I couldn't help but admire their playful nature and feel both grateful and proud at the same time. I couldn't help but smile knowing that I am creating the exact life I want for myself and my family. I know that this little person of mine is witnessing me create the roadmap to happiness which she can happily use herself one day to make her own dreams come true! So is a morning of admin going to get in the way of that? Hell no!

And what about you? Take a moment to go outside, bring a pen and paper (or the notes app in your phone) and reflect on the above suggestions of bringing some of the things you love into your days. And if you want a bit more, reflect on these questions:

  • Have you ever taken the time to think about how you want to work?

  • How do you want to spend your time?

  • When is the last time you enjoyed yourself so deeply that time was non-existent?

  • How do you want to live your life?

  • How much do you want to work?

  • What type of work do you want to do?

  • Where do you want to work? Why?
